European Fields - Amazing

Wigan Athletic fan site Ye Old Tree and Crown very often throws up some quirky yet very interesting links to bits of trivia, news or just items of interest, more often than not football related and the latest that I have come across is a link to a slide show of some photographs taken by Dutch photographer Hans van der Meer entitled European Fields.

The 53 year olds collection of photographs were taken over the period of a decade as he travelled around Europe capturing images of the other side of the football coin, the have not`s, rather than photograph the magnificent splendour of the Nou Camp, San Siro or the Emirates van der Meer has captured the equally splendid but somewhat diverse beauty of football being played in remote outposts of Sweden, Scotland, England, Poland and many other European countries or bang in the city centres on pieces of land more suitable for well, other things.

Though all his photographs take in games being played at the grounds it is the location and the surrounding scenery that jump out and the football looks in most cases as secondary, take a look here at hansvandermermeer.nl and you`ll see what I mean.

There are some truly fantastic images, a pitch surrounded by tyres in Poland, one in Sweden chiselled from amongst rocks and set aside a fjord as a penalty is about to be taken and frost bitten countryside in England with the keeper sat on his bum as the rest of the team make their way to the centre circle following a goal.
