Martinez Defends Scharner Strop

Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez has defended the actions of Latics player Paul Scharner on Wednesday night when the Austria international reacted badly after being substituted in the goalless draw with Portsmouth.

Trouble first flared as the players were leaving the field for the half-time break when Scharner and team mate James McCarthy were seen having strong words with each other and it took the intervention of Titus Bramble to calm the situation down.

The occasion appeared to have got to the 29 year old Austria international captain, he played with a nervousness that took the edge of his game and the crowd started to become impatient with him. When Scharner was substituted on 56 minutes there was a loud cheer from a section of the home support, this didn`t go down well and he headed straight up the tunnel.

When the game had finished Scharner, according to the Daily Mirror, had already left the ground prompting some to question his commitment to the fight to keep the Latics in the Premier League but boss Roberto Martinez just put it all down to frustration and he says that the whole squad are feeling anxious.

Speaking to the press Martinez said: "Scharner is a winner. We all felt a bit anxious and frustrated and he was just feeling it. He has no issues whatsoever."

Absoluty.

Yes - but I was appalled at the cheer from the crowd - it was really obvious. Yes, Paul Scharner had a poor game, and missed a few opportunities, but people often forget that he had done the work to get in the right place for those chances. I know there're always rumours that he wants to move to a bigger club, and that some Latics fans resent that; but he plays for us, always puts the effort in (whether it's good or not), and deserves more respect from the crowd.

My stance on booing is well known and I think that Scharner is a proper Latics legend, we all need to get behind the lads and pull in the same direction, but also the players need to forget egos and show the fans that it bothers them as well
worbo
You may not realise it, but though booing may have an initial negative effect, it may well work to being positive. It's no use just blaming the fans for being un happy. The players have a responsibility, and need to improve what was a dire performance. I suppose you could also clap a dire performance and see if that works!!
zakidaman
Actually ZDM, while your last comment was meant in sarcasm, a similar sort of thing worked for Burnley against Man City.

Yes but not before they'd gone through the booing process lol. Same with West Ham... they were booed because they played *****e, then the players responded after in a positive way. Now it's up nto our players to mprove everyone wrong and play the gunners off the park in one game at home. Shoot on site and hit the target. We will goals.
