Moaning Brum Bitten on the Bum

I don`t usually comment on decisions in games that don`t affect Wigan Athletic, I usually just watch and enjoy but the Aston Villa Birmingham game has left me a trifle confused.

Late in the game (82nd minute) with the score at 0-0 Agbonlahor races into the Birmingham box with the ball at his feet, Birmingham defender Johnson slides in from behind and brings down Agbonlahor, the referee gives a penalty 1-0 Villa.

A spot on decision but what a fuss that followed!!!

First off the Birmingham players surround the referee, Johnson screaming at his face about his innocence, mind you it`s the same Johnson who screamed at a ref at the DW Stadium earlier this season in an attempt to get Hugo Rodallega sent off for an innocuous challenge, so shouldn`t be too surprised.

At the final whistle the Birmingham players were at it again pointing their fingers at and surrounding the referee and his assistant and Brum boss Alec McLeish had a go as well.

After the game Sky pundit Andy Gray tried his best to convince the world that Johnson had got the ball and it wasn`t a penalty, what?

Gray slowed the replay down, moved the camera angle from the front to the side to the back and still it looked 100% a penalty, then he brought up the referees position which was directly in line and said `if he isn`t sure he shouldn`t have given it`, again what?

He got the ball says Johnson, Brum skipper Carr, boss McLeish and pundit Gray, I say Johnson`s stud almost brushed the ball and he got Agbonlahor, the ball neither sped up or changed direction and he bundled into the Villa player who was heading towards goal, a stonewall penalty.

I must admit I enjoyed watching the Birmingham players anguish and I felt a little retribution for what happened at St. Andrews when the Latics visited in February and got done by the dodgiest of dodgy penalty decisions after Mario Melchiot was adjudged to have brought down Fahey when it was clear that he was at least a yard away from the Irish Olympic diving champion

I remember McLeish at the time saying 'even if there was no contact Melchiot should know better than to challenge there`, well back at you, though there was definitely contact today.

Birmingham have won many plaudits this season for the way they have played, thuggish bullying tactics that have seen them spoil their way to 9th spot in the table and scoring just a paltry 35 goals along the way, revenge is a dish best served cold, nice one Villa and Mr Attkinson.

The defender clearly got the ball first, then Gaby. At least the replays on ESPN show a clear deflection. And Gaby is always looking for penalties in any case. Bad decision !!

As a Villa fan all I can say is thank you.Sky had an angle they tried to run with after the game,I thought the guy interviewing MoN tried to challenge him.He gave his opinion on the penalty and the interviwer basically said he was wrong, they were provoking the managers afterwards.Gray threw a bit of a hissy fit then.Poor coverage,ESPN is much better.Glad yez are staying up.

"thuggish bullying tactics" are you having a laugh? We played better football than the Vile today and outplayed you at your place earlier in the season. I think you're getting us mixed up with someone else. Birmingham are hardly a big bruising side - try watching a game without prejudice! As for us moaning - so you're not moaning about a 6month old decision? Mate, you're an idiot. Go back to the game of Rugby, you obviously know more about it.

What a load of complete bull. Johnson was side by side with Yourmumsawhore and clearly and fairly won the ball as stated by Andy Gary who was completely impartial. He made contact he was allowed to if he won the ball and he did wether he just brushed it or not he won the ball. But you know ***** all about football so nobody should be too concerned.

Think Blues deserved at least a draw the way they played, both keepers were outstanding but think it was a penalty and the pictures show it was from behind: Vital Villa Click Here

Dont worry about it! Im pretty sure come this time next year we will be talking about Birmingham being relegated with someone like Avram Grant at the helm!

I don't think you have a point cause the tackle came in from the side your pictures are very biased by the way. The two players legs get caught that is the point your debating right? If two players legs tangle after a fair tackle that wouldn't make it a foul would it? Just accept it was dodgy.

It goes without saying that Wigan Athletic FC one of the worst supported clubs in England, are also the most bitter.

not sure how 'my' pictures are biased Mark, I didn't get the player to be behind Gabby? The ball was deflected towards goal + the rules don't say if you get the ball it isn't a foul.

That said, your lot did you proud today I thought, plenty to be positive about for next season and a few more local derbies with the boing boing boys coming up

I can somewhat see what the city fans are complaining about. But the touch by the defender did not change the balls direction and the ball was still in play after his touch and it was moving towards goal with Gabby as the closest man to it so he was still deprived of a goal scoring change off the ball, plus if you dive in like that there is always a risk of a pen even if its not. To say City are Bullys is a bit unfair but to say they dont play a rather physical game is not true as seen today countless times they went in very hard and dangerously on our key players in an attempt to intimidate them, a harsh pen but looking at the refs view, the movement of the ball, Gabbys position and the actions of city in the match it had to be given.

Why is this even a debated subject it wasn't a penalty it won't change the outcome of the game. Don't worry you won't have your penalty deducted. Maybe you feel some justice because you think you should have had a penalty in the semi-final against Man U and in the final against Chelsea maybe you should I don't know. But if Man City get a dodgy penalty next week don't complain!!

It makes me worried that people actually believe the crap spouted on TV. On MOTD last night the commentator was making a fuss about the corner quadrants when the rule is that the ball as to touch any part of it, including the paint. Shouldn't the commentators at least know the rules of the game? Plus the nonsense Hansen and Shearer come out with makes me feel dumber every time I hear it! Sigh pundit numbskulls.

No disrespect avantsweater but to be fair the pundits have actually played the game in the case of Andy Gray he's been working for Sky now for more than 10 years.

For the record it wasn't justice for Wigan either we had a dodgy penalty given against us versus Man City but I wasn't complaining then about incompetent pundits. ....and fazman I just won't bother.

Just because you play the game doesn't mean you know the rules or even know the sport. As BBC and Sky pundits clearly demonstrate week in and out.
