Wigan Athletic player of the season night turned out to be yet another fantastic event and Vital Latics was there with camera and video camera to record some of the sights and sounds of the night!!!
The evening started off with a nice surprise when the three likely lads, myself, Neil and Kent arrived at the venue and found that we`d be sharing a table for the evening with seven lovely ladies, result.
The beer and wine flowed for most of the evening the company was good, Dave Whelan was on top form when he gave his customary speech but it was clear that he is fully behind manager Roberto Martinez when he spoke of making a challenge for a top ten finish next season.
I managed to speak to quite a few players, Mario was as cordial as ever, a true professional and gent so too was Titus who was hobbling around on crutches following an operation to repair a stress fracture of his lower leg.
Graeme Jones was very open when myself and Neil spoke to him about the season and the state the club was in when they took charge, he said they are still a little way off yet but watch us go next season.
The star for me though was Paul Scharner, the guy is an absolute legend, he was still around talking to guests at the bitter end long after the other players had gone, Kent who was in my party is from Norway, Bergen in fact where SK Brann are based from where we signed Scharner back in 2006 and when Scharner realised this Kent couldn`t get away from him, he wanted to know all about how the club was doing even what the weather was like, he was just so infectious talking with passion to a fan and he made Kent feel very special.
I also spoke to Brenda Spencer, our CEO who is retiring from her post in the next few weeks, she said she needed the rest, I asked her what her favourite memories are of her time at the Latics, she said that she had too many and perhaps should write a book, but then said that most of the good stuff wouldn`t be allowed to get printed!!! She is definitely a real character in her own right.
A good night.
