Latics Sign Defender Dspite Arsenal Interest

Wigan Athletic defender Steve Gohouri has signed a new two year deal at the club despite reported interest from Premier League rivals Arsenal.

The 29 year old Ivory Coast international joined in January after being released by German club Borussia Monchengladbach and once he gained some fitness the big defender certainly has been impressing with some solid and enthusiastic performances

Gohouri capped another fine display at the heart of the Latics defence last Monday when he scored a last minute equaliser with an over head kick in the 2-2 draw with Hull at the DW Stadium.

Speaking to the official web site Gohouri says he is delighted to be staying, he said: 'I love it here in England and in the Premier League and I want to thank the manager for giving me the chance to prove myself.

'Now I want to concentrate on staying fit and getting in the side on a regular basis next season and help to push the club to the next level.'

An obviously delighted Latics manager Roberto Martinez commented: 'Steve has impressed everyone at the club with his commitment, power and skill.

'He is desperate to prove himself at Wigan Athletic and I am delighted he has agreed to stay with us. He will add fantastic competition to the squad.'
