Martinez Undecided Over Keeper Choice

Martinez Undecided Over Keeper Choice

A question on most Wigan Athletic supporters lips this week is will Vlad Stojković keep his place in goal for the trip to Stamford Bridge or will Mike Pollitt be drafted in to replace the Serbia international who had a bit of a mare last week against Hull, to put it mildly.

Stojković is eccentric in the extreme and though a very good shot stopper he is more akin to a five-a-side keeper than a Premier League one, he is I suppose you`d say a stereotypical continental keeper, he wont catch the ball and punches or attempts to, at anything that comes near to him and his distribution is also very poor.

He was at fault with Hull`s first goal last week, on his previous outings he cost Latics goals at both Manchester City and Notts County with either poor decisions or a failure to catch the ball, for me he is something of a liability.

On the other hand we do have Mike Pollitt who is steady as a rock, his reactions may have slowed slightly due to him nearing pensionable age but at least you know what you are getting, a big solid keeper that will give you a steady performance.

Latics boss Roberto Martinez is undecided, he told the press: 'I've not made up my mind yet. There has been a lot of talk about the position this week. Vlad has a completely different style. It is not a style we are used to in the Premier League but he is Serbia's No1 goalkeeper, he will be playing in the World Cup this summer and he sets himself very high standards.'
