With the World Cup just a matter of weeks away Wigan Athletic supporters could be forgiven for having one eye on England but the other eye firmly focused on the country that has become most Latics fans second favourite national side, Honduras.
Following the success of Wilson Palacios at the DW Stadium before his move to Spurs Wigan and Honduras suddenly appeared to have a connection, a sort of affinity that usually takes years to develop but in this case happened over night, of course the subsequent arrivals of Maynor Figueroa and Hendry Thomas from Olimpia also helped make the bond a strong one.
So onto the World Cup and after a thrilling qualifying campaign through the CONCACAF group our friends from the Americas made it to the big stage for only the second time in history and they`re pitched in a group with a very Latin feel about it, Spain and Chile add a flavour of familiarity to Honduras and I am sure that Switzerland, who make up the four, will feel very much the outsiders
The Catrachos, as Honduras are known, start their group matches with a tough game against Chile before the glamour tie with World Cup favourites and current European Champions Spain, they finish the group stage off with Switzerland the opponents and the possibility of facing the weakest team last and a win here just might be enough to see Honduras progress through to the knock out stage.
Latics midfield man Hendry Thomas is certainly excited at the prospect of facing the big teams on the big stage and he promises us all that Honduras will be entertaining and even though they wont be the favourites Thomas believes that they will cause a shock or two.
Speaking at the Latics training ground Thomas said: 'Every game in qualification was fantastic, in particular the pre-match preparation and the team get togethers'
'Now that we're there we have to focus on performing well and giving a good account of ourselves.
'We are probably one of the less fancied teams in our group, but it doesn't mean to say that we don't fancy ourselves (to win). We think we have a chance.
'It's not that we don't respect our opponents but we certainly don't fear them.
'I suppose the main objective first of all against Spain is to stop them playing and put a break on their tactics. But that doesn't mean we cannot make a nuisance of ourselves and hurt them on the counter.
'What you will notice about us is that we play football in an entertaining way, we like to entertain the fans and I think we play a skilful brand of football.
'No matter who we play against you will see that we try to enjoy our game. Tactically we might differ depending on the opposition but the main ethic is to go out and entertain.'
I cant wait for it all to kick-off, I have my Honduras top and flag waiting to be worn and with a little luck we should all be crying Go Honduras, Viva Catrachos!![]()
