Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan appears to have tightened the financial reins at the Latics with the declaration that the club will need to get rid of players before there will be any arrivals.
Never the Premier Leagues big spenders by any stretch of the imagination but also not afraid to dip into the coffers from time to time with big money signings Charles N`Zogbia, Emile Heskey and Jason Koumas all costing over £5 million, those types of deals though could be a thing of the past if the Latics chairmans recent comments are anything to go by.
Speaking to the Wigan Reporter Whelan says that what has happened to both Portsmouth and Hull will frighten a lot of the clubs in the Premier League and this could drive down the transfer budgets.
Whelan is due to meet Latics manager Roberto Martinez this week to discuss the situation and how the club could make progress with the playing staff. Whelan said: 'First of all we have to decide who is going out before we can decide who is coming in'
'But Roberto has to accept - like every other manager in the Premier League - that there has to be a limit on what they can do.
'I think that has been reinforced by what's happened at Portsmouth and the trouble that Hull are in.
'Everybody in the Premier League has to be looking to try to break even.
'I'll be meeting with him this week to have a chat about the situation, and we'll see how we go.'![]()
