Dave Whelan - Money's Too Tight To Mention

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan appears to have tightened the financial reins at the Latics with the declaration that the club will need to get rid of players before there will be any arrivals.

Never the Premier Leagues big spenders by any stretch of the imagination but also not afraid to dip into the coffers from time to time with big money signings Charles N`Zogbia, Emile Heskey and Jason Koumas all costing over £5 million, those types of deals though could be a thing of the past if the Latics chairmans recent comments are anything to go by.

Speaking to the Wigan Reporter Whelan says that what has happened to both Portsmouth and Hull will frighten a lot of the clubs in the Premier League and this could drive down the transfer budgets.

Whelan is due to meet Latics manager Roberto Martinez this week to discuss the situation and how the club could make progress with the playing staff. Whelan said: 'First of all we have to decide who is going out before we can decide who is coming in'

'But Roberto has to accept - like every other manager in the Premier League - that there has to be a limit on what they can do.

'I think that has been reinforced by what's happened at Portsmouth and the trouble that Hull are in.

'Everybody in the Premier League has to be looking to try to break even.

'I'll be meeting with him this week to have a chat about the situation, and we'll see how we go.'

No major signings then
worbo
not good news
d_manga_fanatic
Well if they are major signings along the lines of Diame, McCarthy, Moses, I will be happy.

I don't think there's a big surprise there - I for one didn't expect big spending. If we have a one-in, one-out policy, we've got enough people worth losing to give us the dosh for a couple of decent buys and their wages. I'm feeling pretty positive.

martinez has to get this right!! its a big ask for a manager
wigan-latics
Going to be an interesting summer.

The players we want out, Koumas etc., are some of the clubs biggest earners, so will free up a substantia amount on the wage bill. You also need to consider how much, or rather how little, everyone else will be spending.

Intelligent investment is what's needed, not big spending. Whelan has never been known for "BIG" spending ever, so there's little reason to to expects a change there, but I do think we have constantly suffered in in the main whilst in the premiership, for a decent consistent striker, and 5, 6, 7, 8 million won't do it as Hugo and Moreno have proven. I think a decent striker at a decent price is hard to find.

I'm in a mixed kind of frame about this....

Well Colunga won t be signing then. Whats happened to McArthur??
lathamwafc
McArthur is probably on vacation I would imagine? There's no time crunch to sign him he's not going to the WC. A decent striker at any price is hard to find. Even 'proven' players like Keane and Berbatov etc can flop if the club isn't a good fit for them. As per the spending if the player seems like they are worth it we have pushed the boat out a bit (Andy Johnson, Zog, Owen, Koumas, Heskey), but other wise it's pretty much business as usual. i.e. not spending more than we should be on players.
avantsweater
I read that Colunga is valued around £3-7m so that's in our price range I think.
avantsweater
I think Martinez amongst a whole host of clangers has actually made some very astute signings in McCarthy, Moses, Diame and Insommnia
HuddersfieldYiddo
Bruce signed Zog, but the point does remain that RM has made some good signings (and bad). Success in the transfer market is going to be crucial for us. We will have a very rough go of it next season if mistakes are made.
