John Benson To Step Down At Wigan Athletic

According to the Mirror Wigan Athletic General Manager John Benson is set to leave the club after losing a so called `power struggle` with team manager Roberto Martinez over new signings.

Benson has a long association with the Latics firstly being John Deehans assistant manager before taking the reins himself and guiding the club to within a whisker of promotion losing to Gillingham in the 1999/2000 play-off final at Wembley.

He left briefly for a stint at Birmingham City as their General Manager but returned to the Latics to work alongside Paul Jewell who he apparently didn`t see eye to eye with.

Benson has worked well during his time at Wigan bringing some class players to the club and he can certainly spot a player, he is credited with the signings of Graeme Jones, Andy Liddell, Arry DeZeuuw and Mario Melchiot amongst others

Good old John. I met and spoke with him in a nice cosy steam room a few times at Wrightington country club. Nice man, down to earth, good scout and a gent.
