Sunderland Turn Their Attention To Kirkland

Wigan Athletic goalkeeper Chris Kirkland is once again being linked with a move up to the North East to team up with former Latics manager Steve Bruce at Sunderland.

Bruce apparantly wants to replace current Sunderland keeper Craig Gordon and according to the Daily Mail he sees Kirkland as the obvious choice and the paper says he will make a £5 million offer for the big shot stopper.

Kirkland only signed a four year extension deal with the Latics last June and he says that he wants to repay the faith and support that the club has shown him through out his time at Wigan with his injury problems.

Indeed the 29 year old missed the last two games of the season, once it was confirmed that the clubs Premier League status was secure, due to an operation that he had on a finger injury that`s been troubling him since his Liverpool days. Speaking at the player of the season dinner Kirkland said he had the operation so he would be 100% fit for the new campaign with the Latics.

Ex-boss Bruce stirred a fuss with his endless pursuit of firstly Lee Cattermole and then Maynor Figueroa from Wigan, though he was unsuccesful with Figueroa he does have the habit of being able to unsettle players and Bruce certainly rattled Roberto Martinez when the current Latics manager was scathing of his predecessors recruitment tactics.

If Bruce does fancy taking Kirkland to Sunderland then you can be sure we will hear a lot about it in the press as old Spud Nose knows how to work the media boys, somehow though I dont think the Latics will be too keen to do business with him.

Bruce can't leave our players alone, can he?
03/06/2010 12:43:00
LOL @ Robin The exact same thing could be said against RM and Swansea.
03/06/2010 13:44:00
he is no were near worth 5 million!!!! i would make him leave for that price coz this season has been dissapointing for him
03/06/2010 13:45:00
Swap him for Gordon would be a good deal in my opinion
03/06/2010 13:50:00
I would let him go. He is really not all that good. I cant remember him ever playing a 'blinder' and being a match winner. He is not in the same class as Gordon, a swap would be a great bit of business.

I like Kirky but if they make a decent offer we should let him go.
03/06/2010 16:26:00
You know who Martinez will replace him with.... Stojkovic! and OrigionalXOR who have Wigan bought form Swansea? One player! Scotland! Gomez was bought from Espanyol if we didnt sign him someone else would of in the premier league so he wouldnt of stayed with Swansea anyway and Leon Brittan is a free agent so anyone can sign him, Nothing to do with Swansea and we wont even try and sign Prattley so back off with your 'Martinex buys all Swansea players' when clearly he doesnt!

Why would we swap Kirkland for a keeper who played solidly all season in the shape of Gordon, this story is nonsense and comical at best. Why risk £5m for a back up goaly when we are buying the Belgian U21 this week?
03/06/2010 18:32:00
kirkland didn't look too good this season... so i will let him go and then buy an good replacement. Stephan Andersen from Brondby IF in Denmark could be a good signing. i watch him every week and he got the level to the premier league. he is also a former charlton keeper. if not Andersen then Russ Turnbull

Latics v Brighton - Big Game Preview

Latics are back at the DW Stadium this afternoon following a very creditable draw on Tuesday away at Leeds, the game extending our unbeaten run to four, which must give us something of a platform to build on as the season is starting to take shape.

Brighton are flying high at the moment, currently 3rd in the Championship with just one away defeat, Newcastle at St James's Park and they have players, especially in attack, of exceptional quality at this level.
