Latics Off To Chester in August
Wigan Athletic are to send a select XI to the Deva Stadium to play Chester City in a preseason friendly to help raise some finances for the struggling club. The game will take place on Sunday August 1st and a kick-off time of 1pm has been pencilled in.
Chester were unceremoniously dumped from the Blue Square Conference last season for failing to fulfil a fixture against Forest Green Rovers due to their players refusing to play because they hadn`t been paid and then facing a winding up order in court.
Chester are set to start all over again in the lower reaches of the non-league pyramid and of course they have a strong Latics connection with boss Roberto Martinez an ex-player and first team coach Graham Barrow an ex Chester manager
Speaking to the Latics official website Martinez says about the Chester game: 'Chester City is a club close to mine and Graham Barrow's heart, and what has happened to them is very sad.
'Hopefully this game will be a boost for the new Chester FC and attract a crowd into the Deva Stadium, somewhere that holds plenty of memories.
'It will also be a great work-out for ourselves in time for the new season.'
