Latics New Boy Antolin Alcaraz Looks The Business

Wigan Athletic new signing Antolin Alcaraz and his Paraguay side succumbed to the pre-tournament favourites Spain in a very close encounter that saw the Spanish secure passage through to a semi-final tie with Germany by virtue of a late David Villa goal.

This tournament has provided the majority of Latics fans their first glimpses of Alcaraz and he does look a very promising prospect for the heart of the defence down at the DW Stadium, in Paraguay`s first game in the tournament the centre back scored the opening goal in a 1-1 draw with current World Champions Italy with a great header and he has gone on to put in some strong performances and provided one of the reasons whilst the South Americans have been within touching distance of a semi-final spot.

In last nights game he did concede a penalty when David Villa did a half pike and flop following the slightest of touches but Alonso had his spot kicked saved and so it didn`t prove to be the decisive moment, that came when Villa hit home a rebound after a shot cannoned off the post in the 82nd minute.

Paraguay themselves had a good goal ruled out for off-side and also a penalty that was saved, they were very unlucky to be knocked out of the competition and in Antolin Alcaraz the Latics look to have got a cracking player.
