Latics Lose in Masters Final

Wigan Athletic past masters showed the present crop how to perform when they made the final of the Merseyside Masters tournament at the Echo Arena only to lose 4-1 in the final to last years winners Tranmere Rovers.

Latics were placed in what looked like a really tough group, group A alongside Liverpool and Everton, group B featured Tranmere, Preston NE and Blackpool.

The Latics squad was Tony Pennock in goal with John Doolan, Peter Atherton, Gareth Whalley, Peter Atherton, John Robertson, Arjan De Zeeuw, Graeme Jones and Andy Lyons making up the rest of the squad.

The group results were:

Group A
Everton 3 Wigan Athletic 5
Liverpool 1 Everton 5
Wigan Athletic 3 Liverpool 3

Group B

Preston North End 2 Blackpool 3
Tranmere Rovers 5 Preston North End 1
Blackpool 2 Tranmere Rovers 3

In the final Tranmere Rovers who featured in their team ex Latics players Stuart Barlow, Ged Brannon, Shaun Garnett and Paul Cook proved too strong and ran out 4-1 winners.

Losing to Tranmere Rovers .......is that a portent?

I think some places typically known as Wigan areas now fall within the Merseyside boundaries. Maybe this qualifies Wigan. There is a North West Masters but I'm not sure which teams are in that. Maybe they've put Wigan in the Mersey Masters because they're slightly closer to Liverpool than Manchester. Graeme Jones missed the first game because he had been flying back from San Francisco since 5am and got stranded at Heathrow so fair do's to him for making it. He must have knackered. Scored two goals against Liverpool in the second match, one being a cracker. Arjan de zeeuw looked sharp. Score a great individual goal against Everton. Sign him up Roberto!
