Kirkland Gives Latics Cause To Worry

Wigan Athletic goalkeeper Chris Kirkland has given boss Roberto Martinez a major worry ahead of the new season after pulling up in training with a recurrence of his back injury and being forced to miss the clubs training trip to Sweden.

With Richard Kingson and Vladimir Stojkovic both leaving the Latics it puts the club on full alert for quality back up with just veteran Mike Pollitt and 17 year old Lee Nichols the only keepers on the clubs books.

Kirkland missed the last few games of last season following an operation to fix a long standing finger and hand problem and his absence from the team was sorely missed, now this latest setback will severely test the Latics and the pressure will be on Martinez to bring someone in as soon as possible.

With Mario Melchiot gone, Titus Bramble and Gary Caldwell set to miss the start of the season through injury and Maynor Figueroa highly tipped to be leaving the Latics the first game of the season against Blackpool could possible have a whole new back four and goalkeeper in place.
