Wigan Athletics Lee Nicholls in England Squad

Wigan Athletic goalkeepers seem to be making all the headlines at the moment, we have Chris Kirkland suffering a back injury and being forced out of a bonding trip to Sweden with the rest of the squad, new loan signing Ali Al-Habsi completing his move from Bolton yesterday and now young keeper Lee Nicholls making the England under 19 squad for the European Championships in France which get underway on Sunday.

17 year old Nicholls is the youngest player in the England squad and it is a great accolade for the Latics Young Player of the Season to be included and he will gain some invaluable experience by competing in the tournament.

With just two keepers in the squad, the other being Norwich City youngster Declan Rudd, Nicholls could get the nod to start at least one game with the first being against Austria this Sunday, they follow that up with matches against the Netherlands on Wednesday (21st) and France on Saturday (24th July).

Latics boss Roberto Martinez is very pleased for Nicholls and spoke to the clubs official website, Martinez said: 'Lee has had a fantastic season and has deserved his call-up which will give him and everyone else at the club a real boost'

'The experience he will gain at the Championships will be invaluable to him and we all wish him the best of luck in France.'
