Martinez Pleased With Youth Progress

Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez is becoming excited at the progress being made by several of the clubs youth players.

The Latics boss is an advocate of developing young players in the right way and he is pleased to note that a couple of the youth team are ahead of where he expected them to be at this stage of their career.

There were several of the young Latics stars who featured in last nights 1-1 draw with Oldham and Martinez says the game gave him the chance to assess how far they have come in the past 10 months.

Young Spanish defender Roman Golobart looked particularly impressive and he is highly thought of at the club with Martinez signalling out the teenager for special praise and commenting that he expects him to be pushing for the first team this coming season.

Other youngsters to impress last night included Jordan Mustoe and Daniel Redman and speaking to the clubs official website Martinez was clearly pleased, he said: 'The Oldham game allowed us to further monitor the progress being made by the young players at the club, and we're still looking at our options during the transfer window.

'But it will also depend on how those young players continue to develop. It's important that they are the future of this football club and we're very committed to helping them fulfil their potential.

'For the last ten months we've been working very hard with that group of 18-22 year-olds and there are one or two individuals who are ahead of where we expected them to be, which is extremely promising.

'I can see two or three players at the moment who are very close to making the first-team.'

Well worbo, Lee Nicholls is already a player of England u19. It's very good for a club like Wigan, isn't it?
