Latics Close In On Ronnie Stam

Latics Close In On Ronnie Stam

Wigan Athletic are believed to be close to signing FC Twente right back Ronnie Stam who was part of the team managed by former England boss Steve McLaren which won the Dutch league last season.

With Mario Melchiot departing for pastures new the right back spot is a little lightweight leaving Latics stalwart Emerson Boyce as the only recognised player with first team experience of playing in the position in the Premier League.

Stam joined FC Twente in 2008 from NAC Breda where he had made 122 appearances and so far the 26 year old has played 57 times for FC Twente and he was thought to be set to join Ajax earlier this month but that deal appears to have broken down leaving the way open for the Latics to step in.
