Dave Whelan - No English Talent Available

Wigan Athletic owner Dave Whelan has spoken about the frustration the club has encountered when trying to find English talent to bring to the DW Stadium and although in Victor Moses the Latics managed to unearth a gem, he appears to be the exception to the norm.

Speaking to the Sun Whelan says that the priority is to keep the Latics a Premier League club and if English talent cant be found to do that then he will sanction the recruitment of players from overseas, that tactic is quite obvious when you consider that of current boss Roberto Martinez` signings for Wigan Athletic only the afore mentioned Moses is English, whilst the other eleven are from all four corners of the world.

Whelan says ideally he wants the Latics and other Premier League clubs to have English players but they just aren`t out there and he is alarmed at the lack of talent.

Speaking to the Sun Whelan said: 'Our priority here must be to keep this club in the Premier League and we will do whatever it takes to achieve that

'I would love to see a lot more English players in our side - and also in every other Premier League team.

'But the sad fact is that there is an alarming dearth of talent out there.

'It is not a question of whether players in the Championship and elsewhere represent good value. It is down to a lack of quality.

'That is why clubs like ourselves shop abroad.'

'If you can show me players who are as good over here, I'll happily open the cheque-book'

'I don't believe you will manage that, because, believe me, we have looked long and hard.'

Nathaniel Clyne at Palace looks a good prospect and he's English

id take jack wiltshire on loan at least, looked quite good when with noblot and would be playin with players of a higher quality here

The problem is so many English players are in the top clubs reserve teams. If Latics didn't sign Moses he to could have ended up as a reserve elsewhere. Scotlands a different matter as so many Premier League clubs no longer bring players in from that region leaving the market open to the likes of Latics.

He's 100% percent right. No young English players at a price Wigan can afford. The big teams just buy them!

And then bench them.

Did Dave Whelan just say he'd happily open the cheque book?
centrelink1
He did - but he only meant to ensure that the cheques were still all there.

He was ready to pay £8.5m for Andy Johnson! And a lot more for Owen, neither wanted to come to Latics though.
