Martinez Assesses Stephen Caldwell

Wigan Athletic are assessing the fitness and ability of former Burnley captain Stephen Caldwell who was released by the Championship club at the end of last season following their relegation from the Premier League, Stephen of course is the brother of Latics centre back Gary Caldwell who at the moment is recovering from two hip operations.

Stephen Caldwell spent the majority of last season on the treatment table at Turf Moor and he has been training with local rivals Bolton Wanderers since the beginning of July in an attempt to regain his fitness.

With Caldwell`s brother being at Wigan Athletic it seems only natural that he should also spend time with the Latics and Martinez is running the rule over the defender who made an appearance in yesterdays win against Dundee United as a first half substitute for Steve Gohouri who picked up a little knock.

Speaking about Stephen Caldwell Martinez said: "Stephen is trying to get his full fitness back and he hasn`t played a lot of football this year,"

"He had a couple of niggles and needs to play football to get his intensity back. You could see how much Stephen enjoyed the run-out. He is a talker and a leader and there are not many of his type around.

"We will speak to Stephen, and obviously these things boil down to a few things such as numbers. We need to carry on assessing Stephen"
