Gary Caldwell Named New Latics Captain

Wigan Athletic have announced that following the departure from the club of former skipper Mario Melchiot the new club captain will be Gary Caldwell, who is expected to be sidelined until October whilst he recovers from two hip operations.

Caldwell joined in January from SPL side Celtic and when he signed Latics boss Roberto Martinez indicated at that time that Caldwell was a leader both on and off the pitch so it comes as no surprise to hear that the Scotland international has been given the honour of Wigan Athletic club captain.

Chris Kirkland deputised with the armband in the seasons opener against Blackpool last Saturday and he shares the assistant captain duties along with Steve Gohouri and Emmerson Boyce, lets hope that the responsibility doesn`t prove to be a weighty one
