Whelan Asks Fans To Get Behind The Boss

Whelan Asks Fans To Get Behind The Boss

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has asked the clubs supporters to get behind both the team and the manager ahead of Saturdays clash against Chelsea.

The Latics made the worst possible start to the season last weekend when newly promoted Blackpool put 4 goals past Chris Kirkland and left the home fans at the DW Stadium in a state of shock as they had hoped for a positive start to the campaign.

Once again a section of supporters at the club have started to turn on manager Roberto Martinez and have been calling for his head to roll for most of the past week, but is that the answer?

It is obvious that certain supporters and indeed certain members of the local press have had the knives out for Martinez since he arrived at the club and they actual seem to revel in the big defeats and poor performances that have occurred over the past twelve months, what their reasons or motives are I have no idea.

It is fair to say though that the Latics were truly shocking last week, they appeared to be caught cold by a Blackpool side that were full of vigour, direct and certainly got amongst the play to unsettle the Wigan players on the ball, but it was the first game of the season and these things have a habit of happening.

Last year we went to Villa Park on the opening day and played Aston Villa off the pitch to get a fantastic start to the season, Everton were absolutely dreadful as they fell 6-1 to Arsenal at Goodison Park, so it isn`t unheard of for a shock result coupled with a poor performance.

Now Latics owner Dave Whelan is asking for the supporters to get behind the boss and help the Latics bounce back, Whelan said: "Calling for the manager to be sacked doesn`t really help anybody"

"We are in this together. I`m hoping we can bounce back but the Blackpool defeat didn`t really surprise me."

mr whelan is right in asking for the fans to get behind roberto.i think he will be a really good manager once he gets the team to stop embarassing themselves and the fans.but he may have to consider the fact that chris kirkland is not up to the required standard of the prem league

"We are all in this together"? Wonder where he got that one from; Oh yes, his beloved leader down in that London. I have a lot of time for Mr W but he has painted himself into a corner by saying he would not sack the manager even if he takes us into the Championship. The appoinment of Roberto was universally welcomed by the fans but what we saw last season didnt really reflect the optomism. Poor performances against poor opposition but getting lucky against the better sides saved us from the drop last season. The signs were certainly there and following the display against Blackpool it is understandable the natives might be a bit miffed. Why does he think the strikers we have are good enough to plough a lone furrow up front against four defenders? If they were that good they would be in one of the top sides. Blackpool had a defence who had never met each other before and yet we could hardly get a shot on target. Roberto, Jones and Barrow are out of their depth in the shark infested waters of the Premiership. Now, having said all that, I want them to go out and stuff Chelsea tomorrow.

Sacking the manager doesn't help anybody, obviously he didn't think that when he binned Rioch, Mathias, Barrow and Hutchings.

Sorry Sm, but getting lucky against the better sides is a bit harsh. We outplayed Villa on opening day, were playing well against Chelsea until the sending off, out-enthused Liverpool and came back from 2-0 behind to beat Arsenal. Hardly lucky...

Big win tomorrow hopefully
