Latics v City Memories - 1999 Play-offs

Wigan Athletic v Manchester City is a fixture that has produced some very good games down the years with exciting football and not without a touch of controversy either.

Back in 1999 both clubs qualified for the play-off`s for promotion from what is now League 1, a two-legged affair with the first game due to be the last ever competitive match at our old Springfield Park ground.

The game was a total sell out with both sets of fans genuinely believing that their club was on the verge of something big, both were right.

Latics were managed by Ray Mathias, City by Joe Royle, in the City team was Michael Brown and up front for the Latics was current first team coach Graeme Jones.

Latics went into the game having played 7 games in just over two weeks due to fixture congestion and as a result players were either injured, carrying slight knocks or totally fatigued, I`m not using that as an excuse though;)

Following a 1-1 at Springfield Park, Shaun Goater punched the ball into the net to give City a 1-0 win at Maine Road, I aint bitter and twisted.
