Gary Caldwell Named in Scotland Squad

Wigan Athletic club captain Gary Caldwell has been named in the Scotland squad for the Euro 2012 qualifying matches against Czech Republic and Spain, even though he hasn`t played a first team game so far this season following a double hip operation during the summer.

Caldwell featured in a behind closed doors friendly last week against York City and he managed to complete 45 minutes, this week the gritty Scot played for the reserves in their reserve league game at West Ham and got 65 minutes under his belt as he stepped up his rehabilitation, but his selection for international duty is still a bit of a shock.

Latics boss Roberto Martinez said only last week that Caldwell wouldn`t be ready for a return to the first team squad until at least the first week in November, maybe Scotland boss Craig Levein is desperate for Caldwell`s experience with two tough games coming up.

Also in the Scotland squad is a familiar name to Latics fans, Lee McCulloch or as he was known down here, Super Lee McCulloch, who is now at Rangers of course, he is aiming to add to his 17 caps whilst in the twilight of his career, the big man made 224 appearances for the Latics, so good luck Super Lee, it`s good to see he is still going strong.

The full Scotland squad:

Goalkeepers: McGregor (Rangers), Gilks (Blackpool), Gordon (Sunderland)

Defenders: Hutton (Tottenham), Berra (Wolves), Broadfoot (Rangers), McManus (Middlesbrough), G Caldwell (Wigan Athletic), Weir (Rangers), Whittaker (Rangers)

Midfielders: Adam (Blackpool), Brown (Celtic), Dorrans (West Brom), McCulloch (Rangers), Fletcher (Manchester United), Morrison (West Brom), Robson (Middlesbrough), McEveley (Barnsley), Maloney (Celtic)

Strikers: Fletcher (Wolves), Iwelumo (Burnley), Mackie (QPR), Miller (Rangers), Naismith (Rangers)

Latics v Nottingham Forest - Big Game Preview

You can dress it up as you like, but for the Latics this is a game that they just have to win, we start a run of fixtures that would surely have been earmarked as ones to gain maximum points from and get us up the Championship table.

Forest arrive at the DW Stadium just six points ahead of us in the standings, they have injury problems, particularly in defence, they are on a poor run of form having lost their last three games, conceding 10 goals along the way, this is a time when we simpl
