Maynor Figueroa - Goal of the Season - Finally


Wigan Athletic left back Maynor Figueroa has been awarded the coveted BBC Match of the Day Goal of the Season award for his wonder strike against Stoke at the Britannia Stadium in January.

The winner is usually announced at the end of the season but, according to a BBC insider, Figgy`s goal was so far and away the best that the producers of the show forgot to announce that the 60 yard free-kick was the number one strike of the 2009/10, or maybe because Figueroa plays for the Latics and they find it very difficult to say anything positive about our club.

Maynor Figueroa though remains unfazed by the fact that it took so long to give him the recognition for the stunner and he just says it`s nice to be voted number 1.

Figgy says: "I hadn`t seen that I had won, but it makes me very happy to win the award.

"It is nice to be valued and to be voted number one."


Speaking about the goal Latics boss Roberto Martinez says that the award is very well desereved and that it is one of the best ever Premier League goals, Martinez said: "It was very well-deserved, every time you see it, it gets better and better.

"The award has been a long time coming but it`s something Maynor will treasure forever.

"Maynor is capable of reaching the ball from that kind of distance, and the technique to make the right contact.

"But to try it, in a proper game, is the key aspect of the goal - and means it will always be one of the best-ever goals in the Premier League."
