'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Wigan Athletic - Sign of the Times

Take a drive into Wigan from outside the Borough, return from holiday, come home from work or just come to town for any number of reasons and the first striking feature that you will notice is the Welcome to Wigan sign.

Now the sign is a fantastic display of sporting unity for our great town, underneath the `Twinned With Angers` bit, the sign proudly displays the message home of Super League Rugby and Premier League Football.

Hold on a minute, not now it doesn`t?

It appears that over the past few days the Council have spent a bit of dosh, so much for the financial depression, the signs have changed, gone is the bit that celebrates the Latics, just a message proclaiming the success of the Wigan Warriors to become Champions 2010.

Now I am as thrilled as the next person that the Warriors have had success but do we need to change the sign every time there is achievement on the sports field?

Where was the sign proclaiming Home of Goal of the Season following Figgy`s wonder strike, or Home of the Comeback Kings after the Arsenal game? Maybe our local leaders don`t feel they need to celebrate the achievements of the Latics anymore or maybe they feel we are, in the words of Maurice "...a smashing little club, but chosen the wrong place, the backyard of Rugby League..."

Come on council, fair`s fair, celebrate success, yes but remember there are two world class sporting fraternity`s in the town, give us our sign back.

Get on to your local councillor and let them know how you feel.

The offending sign

Should sort out the carling cup team talk. We need a sign lads go out and win it. But seriously only utd left that you would expect us to definately lose to if they play their strongest team, fancy arsenal to get knocked out next round.

this is a bit childish to complain about the wigan warriors sign.they did well to win and it is a nice touch by the council to put the sign up recognising the achievement.im sure the same will happen if wigan manage to do something.all football fans know wigan are a premiership team,we dont need a sign to remind us.

I'd sooner see the bloody POT HOLES filled in on our dreadful roads, than any unnecessary sign in the present financial climate, but if the the man at the Council feels the need, then really he and his cronies should treat both our Wonderful Clubs the same, unless he's one of those old fashioned bias idiots we have been constantly subjected too. Isn't it about time these Elected people learned and led by example. They are supposed to serve all the people of Wigan and not just a few.
