James McCarthy Out For 10 Weeks

Wigan Athletic midfield man James McCarthy is facing a long layoff after suffering damage to his ankle ligaments in Saturdays game with Bolton at the DW Stadium.

McCarthy, who was fed a ball from Latics skipper Antolin Alcaraz, got caught by Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba who tried to nick the ball but clipped the young Scots ankle.

It was evident from McCarthys reaction that he was in trouble and after lengthy treatment on the pitch he was carried off on a stretcher and taken to hospital for assessment.

Reports say that he will be out for a minimum of 10 weeks and it will be the New Year before he will play again for the Latics.

Roberto Martinez says he is relieved that there is no fracture but he will miss his young star for some very important games.

Speaking to the press Martinez said: "It is a little bit better than we thought at first but it is obviously ligament damage in the right ankle. When it is swollen it is sometimes difficult to assess but there is no fracture, we hope.

"We expect to get the results of the scan today and then hopefully it will be eight to 10 weeks."
