Martinez - Kirkland Has Big Role With Latics

Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez has told Chris Kirkland that he wants him to stay at the Latics and despite the fact that he has been out of the side in recent weeks, he is very much part of his plans.

It was widely reported that Kirkland was unhappy about the fact that he was completely fit yet sat on the bench for the past few weeks, with loanee Ali Al-Habsi in fine form it appears that Kirkie will have it all on to gain his place back, the noises in the press suggested that Kirkland will assess his position ahead of the next transfer window in January and could be looking for a new club if he isn`t playing regular with the Latics.

Martinez though says that it`s all been taken out of context and that the 29 year old shotstopper is going nowhere and has a vital role to play at the Latics, Martinez also said that he`d expect Kirkland to be unhappy about not playing.

Speaking to the press Martinez said: 'I have got a great relationship with Chris and we have spoken about his role at the football club.

'I told him he has been a No.1 for many seasons and has earned the respect of the fans and everyone.

'Some of the things that have been in the press I think have been taken out of context.

'We need Chris Kirkland at this football club, there is no other issue at all.

'If he was to be happy and not playing, there would be something really wrong.

'He is a great competitor, has great standards and his role at the football club is vital - playing or not playing.'
