Wigan Athletic For Sale

Wigan Athletic are up for sale, or so it seems with Dave Whelan freely admitting it`s time to get rid because he doesn`t want to pass the burden on to his grandkids.

With the Latics owner losing close friends John Benson and Ronnie Clayton, both died over the weekend, it appears that Whelan may have done some soul searching and took the decision to sell the club.

It is well known that Whelan used Blackburn Rovers and Jack Walker`s investment as his model for how he operated at the Latics, so he will have seen over the past few years how the Ewood Park club has been a drain on the finances of Walkers surviving family members, something Whelan doesn`t want to be his legacy to his grandkids.

Whelan is quoted as saying: "It would be unfair of me to pass the club to my grandchildren. I have been paying in more than £100million and I can`t put them in a position where they have to put money in.

"That is exactly what has happened at Blackburn."

So the Latics are for sale, the question is who will be willing to buy?

Looks like we could be in for an interesting few months

I think there could be quite a few interested parties - Wigan have done well over 6 years in the prem and I believe this will alert potential investors who may want to take the club to a new level. Whelan will be missed. Opinions on him were duly mixed but in retrospect, he was the reason why Wigan Athletic is where they are now. Hope he does well if he does sell the club as well as his family.

I think Whelans family are Clueless about running a Football club anyway. Duncan Sharpe would have been the man for the job, had he still been alive.

Interesting times ahead, we all knew it would come to this at some point, but events in life sometimes push you to makes decisions you don't really want to face.

i agree with worbo wigan have been in the prem for 6 years and could be seen as a good invesment who ever comes in and buys the club needs to put a lot of money forward to stay in the prem and attract good players
