Latics Reserves Top the Table

Wigan Athletic reserves continued their excellent start to the season yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon when Graham Barrows side beat league leaders Newcastle United 2-1 at Robin Park Arena and join the Geordies at the top of the pile.

Joe Holt and Daniel Redmond hit first half goals to put the Latics 2-0 up at the break before substitute Patrick McLaughlin hit a consolation goal for Newcastle with 15 minutes left. Making his comeback in the game was Newcastle defender Steven Taylor who has been out of action for almost a year.

This was a good win and a good performance by the Latics, especially when you consider the only player with anything like 1st team experience was Daniel de Ridder.

Next up for the second string is a trip to Altrincham in two weeks time (18/11/10) where they will face Manchester United

Latics: Nicholls; Buxton, Robinson, Golobart, Mustoe; Breeze, Redmond; Morris (Sunday, 68), Holt, De Ridder; McManaman

Subs: Williams, Lambert, Rugg, Serrano

Newcastle: Soderberg; Tavernier, Dummett, Richardson, Taylor, Grieve, Donaldson, Edmundsson (McLaughlin, 46), Airey, Vuckic, Ferguson

Subs: Henderson, Robinson, Leadbitter, Newton
