Breaking China - Latics in the Far East


Wigan Athletic are making their mark in China, for the second year running the Latics, along with Bolton Wanderers and Chelsea are sponsoring a football tournament in the soccer mad country and hopefully picking a few fans up along the way.

The football tournament, the 188Cup, is run across three cities, with each of the clubs sponsoring one of the cities, the Latics city is Guangzhou which has a population of 11.85 million.

32 teams compete in each of the city stages with the winners going through to the Grand Final. Each of the teams in the Guangzhou tournament is provided with a Latics home and away top to play their games in for the entire tournament.

The tournament attracts a lot of interest from the local media and is featured on TV and in news bulletins giving the Latics some great exposure. The overall winners receive a top prize, as well as picking up the 188Cup they also get the opportunity to come to England and spend time training with the Latics as well as Chelsea and Bolton.

There is a good promotional video on the 188cup home page showing some footage from last years tournament and some girls dancing in our old oranage away top, quite interesting!!!
