Wigan Athletic striker Hugo Rodallega has quoted a line straight from the 10cc hit of the 1970`s Dreadlock Holiday, 'I don`t like cricket, I love it!` Whilst he tries to get to grips with Englishness.
The Colombian marksman joined the Latics from Mexican club Necaxa in January 2009 and he freely admits that it was a bit of a culture shock coming to the North West of England, people in the streets playing this strange game, though he claims that cricket is now one of his favourite sports on TV even though he just can`t get to grips with it.
Hugo says: 'I watch quite a lot of cricket. I like it and it's always on TV but I don't have a clue what's going on.`
'I sit there and watch it, trying to understand it - but I can't.
'I found it weird when I arrived seeing people in the streets playing it. I had no idea what was going on.'
Just as confusing as cricket for Rodallega is the Latics popularity back home in Colombia where Wigan Athletic are now the team to follow on the streets of El Carmelo, Hugo`s home town, as well as other cities throughout the country.
Hugo continues: 'Wigan have become very popular in Colombia because I'm playing here and all the matches are shown on TV'
'People walk around in Wigan shirts . . . I have absolutely no idea where they get them from.
'People think we're a strange team because one minute we are losing 4-0 at home to Blackpool and the next we're winning at Tottenham. People ask me, 'What's going on with Wigan?' '
The Latics today face up to Manchester United, a team they have lost all previous encounters with but that doesn`t faze Hugo, he says: 'You never know what could happen'
'Yes, it's Manchester United at Old Trafford but we have good players too. We are going to look for a win.`
Looking to the future, it`s obvious that Rodallega is settled and happy with life at Wigan, where does he see himself in five years?
Hugo says: 'I hope I've learned a lot, improved a lot. If I'm here, I hope we're challenging for a European place and I'm setting goalscoring records`
So do we Hugo, in the mean time just enjoy your Dreadlock Holiday
