Bainesy Signs 3-Year Contract

Wigan Athletic`s Under-21 England international left-back Leighton Baines has signed a new three-year deal with the club keeping him at the JJB Stadium until 2009. He still had a year left on his old contract.

Baines joined the Latics as a 16-year-old having been released by Liverpool and made his debut in the first team at 17 years old.

Jewell said: ' Bainesy has done magnificently in his short career so far. He has risen with the club from Division Two and has really stood out in the Premiership. It is a massive step up in class required to stay afloat at this level but he has taken to Premiership football like a duck to water and I know he can go on to have a long career at the top.'

Baines said: 'I've always said I wanted to stay at Wigan. This is the club who gave me my chance in football and I wanted to repay the faith they showed in me with a bit of loyalty from my part. I really enjoyed last season in the Premiership. I think I proved I could play at this level but I want to keep improving and the way to do that is to play week-in week-out against the best teams in the country.'
