Wigan Athletic have finally been given the all clear by FIFA to sign former Deportivo La Coruna centre half, Adrian Lopez 'Piscu` and it is believed that the 23 year old will become a Latics player on 1st January once the new window opens, according to the highly respected Spanish news outlet MARCA.
The saga of Piscu`s signing has been going on since June when he allowed his contract at the La Liga club to expire at the end of the season, though negotiations had been undertaken on a new deal no agreement had been reached, with the player believed to be seeking a bigger salary than what was on offer.
So Piscu exercised what he believed to be his right as a free agent, search for another club, whilst Deportivo exercised what they believed was their right, a one year extension on the players contract and held on to his registration as per La Liga rules.
Piscu spent time during August with the Latics as a trialist trying to earn himself a deal in the Premier League, back in Spain, Deportivo La Coruna say the player is their man and if the Latics want him it will cost 1.2 million Euros in compensation.
The transfer deadline came and went and though it was rumoured that Latics boss Roberto Martinez was ready to pay a fee for Piscu, nothing materialised and Deportivo actually registered him as their player with the Spanish FA even though he has never shown up at the club since last season.
Rumour has it that he has been training with the Latics since August awaiting a FIFA ruling to see if he is bound to Deportivo or free to join the Latics, well Deportivo La Coruna now report that FIFA have ruled in favour of the player, but vowed to continue fighting their cause.
Club president Augusto César Lendoiro said in a statement: 'We will continue on with this fight in the courts, the Spanish Federation and FIFA until the very end for the right for compensation or the return of the player'
So it looks like the Latics have finally got their man and Adrian Lopez 'Piscu` will officially become a Wigan Athletic player on 1st January 2011, or will there be another twist to this tale?
