Latics to Newcastle - The Connections

With the Latics taking on Newcastle at the DW Stadium tomorrow and this being a time of reflection, I thought it would be a good idea to take a look at players who have had an impact at both clubs.

Wigan Athletic and Newcastle United have made a few connections down the years with quite a few players pulling on both the Blue and White of the Latics and the Black and White of Newcastle at one time or another:

Dave Beasant, Titus Bramble, Alex Bruce, Paul Dalglish, Tony Dinning, Alan Herron, Keith Gillespie, Alan Kennedy, Gordon Milne, Jimmy Naylor, Michael O`Neill, Georgie Scott, Antoine Sibierski, Charlie Spencer, Roy Tunks, Mickey Quinn, Ryan Taylor and of course Charles N`Zogbia

It`s fair to say that some of the players mentioned above have had an impact at both clubs, Titus Bramble and Antoine Sibierski were fans favourites at the Latics, Ryan Taylor couldn`t stop scoring against the Geordies in his time at the DW Stadium and Charles N`Zogbia is the current Latics player of the season, but it`s a name from the past that holds the most intrigue for me, Mickey Quinn

An old fashioned centre forward Quinn started his career with the Latics, he made his debut as a 17 year old and went on to play 69 games scoring 19 goals, unfortunately for the Latics manager Larry Lloyd decided that Quinny was surplus to requirements and off loaded him to Stockport County.

Whilst at Stockport the bubbly Scouser made a name for himself banging the goals in and so his career as a travelling goal scorer began. He had a wealth of clubs that included Newcastle where he made 115 appearances scoring 59 goals between 1989 - 92 before he was shipped out to Coventry by manager Kevin Keegan.

A great talker on the after dinner circuit Quinn is a larger than life character who as a player was never afraid to put his head, arm, butt or any other part of his anatomy in if it meant scoring a goal.

There are many tales doing the rounds of Quinny and his exploits but one particular one that concerns the Latics comes from the Virgin Media web site:

'When Mick Quinn joined Wigan Athletic he was rumbled for continuing to sign on the dole. Quinn regarded the money as a signing on fee. Luckily the DSS didn`t prosecute, allowing him to pay the money back weekly. Quinn later claimed he needed the money for food - his favourite meal is seconds.`

His book, Who Ate All The Pies, is a gem of a read and is tragically funny following the career of this loveable rogue and his antics around the football circuit, his drinking and many misdemeanours, highly recommended.
