Martinez in the Cruyff Mould
Vital Latics member wigdean is a big fan of the tactical side of football and he has looked at where our boss, Roberto Martinez gets his inspiration, ideas and his football philosophies from, over to wigandean to explain:
I'm a bit of a fan off the tactical side of the game, the formations, the style of play, the focus on the team rather than individuals, etc...having recently read some interviews from Johan Cruyff during his time as a manager where he describes his methods, ideas and thoughts, it's quite obvious that our manager moulds himself in this style and is basing quite a large bit of himself on how Cruyff managed.
For instance - I constantly read about how Martinez should play 4-4-2 or go for the long ball game to drag us out of trouble. However one of Cruyffs most famous quotes 'you must die by your ideas' shows why Martinez will NOT change his style. He believes in it, he believes it will work and he's already shown he will stick by it. All those cries for us to change will fall on deaf ears.
Away from the pitch we have Martinez insisting that his players live in, or as close to, Wigan as possible. This was a favourite of Cruyff. He believed his players should be close to the stadium and class the stadium as their home.
Cruyff also believed that you should train at your stadium or as close to it as possible. Whelan has 'apparently' dropped his interest in buying Christopher Park and the club are looking closer to the stadium. The team also use the stadium for training much more than we ever did under Jewell and Bruce. Maybe that's the reason for our good home form (today excluded!)?
Cruyff also believed that training times should be adapted to suit the situation and the seasons. Under Martinez we have adopted the methods of training in the afternoons/evenings to prepare for later games. He also asked for the floodlights to be installed in order to prepare properly for night games.
Cruyff also believed in the 6 + 5 rule long before it was ever thought of within Uefa/Fifa. He was a big advocate of local players being supplemented with imports. Martinez has made it his target to improve the youth system and bring through our own players into the team.
And then obviously there is the fact that Cruyff gave us the total football/tiki taka style that Martinez is trying to bring to Wigan. But I suppose he can be excused for that seeing as every other team in Spain, and of course the Spanish NT have all adopted it (or tried to).
There are so many more things I could mention (Cruyff and his thoughts on what makes a captain, how football is about entertainment and not so much the results - sound familiar? - how it's better to lose playing good football than to win playing poor football, etc..) I'd be here all night. Obviously I don't know what is going on in the managers head but I found it quite entertaining how much Martinez seems to base himself on Cruyff. Of course it may just be coincidence.
But next time there's a deluge of threads asking for a 4-4-2 maybe you should remember who Martinez looks up to and what his opinions of the game are.
