Chelsea Ready to Bid For James McCarthy?

Wigan Athletic midfield ace James McCarthy is a surprise transfer target of Chelsea according to the People, who claim Carlo Ancelotti is prepared to make a £6 million bid.

McCarthy is a real gem and was brought south from SPL side Hamilton by Roberto Martinez for just over £1 million in the summer of 2009, turning 20 last November the Republic of Ireland international has got a massive future ahead of him.

Likened by many to a young Steven Gerrard, McCarthy has been greatly missed by the Latics during time out with an ankle injury, so much so that they find themselves in the bottom three having picked up just 12 points in the 15 league games that he missed.

McCarthy was always going to go on to bigger and better things, but it was hoped that he would serve his 'apprenticeship` with the Latics and be around the DW Stadium for another two seasons at least.

Chelsea may be too big a club to turn down but the reputed £6 million isn`t. A player of McCarthy`s age, potential and current abilities and maturity must be worth at least three times that amount.

We should sign him and if wigan suggests he's worth more then we have to pay more, but if we sign him he shud be loaned to wigan for 2 years or so to continue he's development, as a wigan fan says , chelsea youth don't even get a kick, an I agree 100%.. Weves started blooding youth but there's not enough trust in them

I don't think the Irish have heard of anything but Man UTD, however, this lad chose to play for Ireland over Scotland, for reasons best known to himself. He's already played for the Irish National side, so it's strange he's unheard of, however I think he's worth about 10 mill at Present, but potentially, I reckon double that. He gets better and better with each season.

He wont go to Chelsea but I do see him as a perfect replacement for Paul Scholes at Old Trafford.

WN1 - the reason he chose Ireland over Scotland is well documented. He wanted to play for Scotland but the Sweaty Socks, in their wisdom, deemed Macca not good enough. Macca has Irish grandparents and the FAI invited him to play for them. In effect, Macca did not choose Ireland over Scotland, Scotland didn't want him.

Gillingham 1-1 Wigan Match Report

Being top of the league didn't last long, did it? We'll leave that talk until May from now on. We drew 1-1 with a well-drilled Gillingham side.

Paul Cook made one change to the side that beat Southend United 3-0 on Saturday. Ivan Toney returned to the starting line-up, replacing Will Grigg.

It was an open first 20 minutes, which saw both sides miss good opportunities. Gavin Massey, Nathan Byrne and Dan Burn all had chances to open the scoring, while Sean Clare came close with a vol
