Sammon On The Menu For The Weekend?

Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez has hinted that January signing Conor Sammon could be ready to step up to the first team squad for this Saturdays visit to Eastlands and the Premier League clash with Manchester City.

The Republic of Ireland under 21 international was signed from SPL side Kilmarnock on transfer deadline day, with 17 goals already under his belt this season Latics fans were hoping that the big fellow would get a run out sooner rather than later, but Martinez doesn`t like to rush his players and prefers to settle them in.

Speaking to Vital Latics recently though the Latics boss did say that Sammon was looking really good in training and it was a certainty that he would be seeing first team action at some point this season.

That point could well be Saturday`s visit to play City, speaking to the Latics official website Martinez says that Sammon is starting to compete for a place in the senior team following a reserve game against Bolton two weeks ago.

Martinez said: 'Every player has individual needs when it comes to training and for Conor it was important for him to continue with his work at the training ground rather than with the Reserve Team'

'Recently he completed an hour against Bolton and now it's important he begins to compete for a place in the senior team, preparing himself for the next step.'
