'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Ex-Latic Takes Managers Post

Former Wigan Athletic defender Pat McGibbon has been named the manager of IFA Premiership club Newry City, who are currently bottom of the table.

McGibbon played for the Latics for five years between 1997 and 2002 making a total of 173 appearances and scoring 12 goals, though the first three month was a loan period before he signed on a permanent move from Manchester United, McGibbon famously scored the goal that gained Latics promotion from Division Three when he headed home from a corner against Colchester United at Springfield Park on 7th April 1997.

McGibbon returned to Northern Ireland shortly after leaving the Latics in 2002 and played for both Portadown and Glentoran before retiring in 2006 at the age of 33 to concentrate on becoming a physio.

Recently McGibbon spent two years as assistant manager at Eircom League side Monaghan United.

Speaking about his appointment at Newry and the task ahead, McGibbon said: 'When you look at the table, I'm well aware of the big task that lies ahead'

'The bottom line is it's my job to get the players motivated and restore some morale.

'We need to try and kick on and start picking up some positive results.

'I know the likes of John Convery and Tommy McCallion from my time with Portadown and Glentoran and I have played against a number of the current first team squad as well.

'From my time at Monaghan, I've seen football on both sides of the border so hopefully, from those experiences, I can bring something new to the table.

'We need to lift the spirit of the players.'
