Latics Have 12 Out On International Duty

Wigan Athletic are going to be 12 players short over the next two weeks, due to international call ups, as they prepare for the visit of Spurs to the DW Stadium in a crucial Premier League clash on the 2nd April.

This is a record number of call-ups for Latics players for one round of internationals and boss Roberto Martinez was suitably chuffed when he said: 'We have some truly great young players in the squad at the moment, and it is tremendous that they are getting the recognition their talents deserve. Of course, we are all keeping fingers crossed they come back in one piece, but to have so many players representing their countries is a tremendous positive for Wigan Athletic.'

Momo Diame (Senegal), Victor Moses (Nigeria), Steve Gohouri (Ivory Coast), James McArthur and Gary Caldwell (Scotland), Ali Al-Habsi (Oman) and Tom Cleverley (England under21) have all got one international game whilst Hendry Thomas and Maynor Figueroa (Honduras), Antolin Alcaraz (Paraguay), Hugo Rodallega (Colombia) and James McCarthy (Republic of Ireland), will have Latics boss Roberto Martinez sweating as they fit two games in whilst away on international duty with their respective countries.

Indeed Alcaraz, Thomas and Figueroa are flying out to South and Central America respectively and face a tough schedule with Paraguay playing Mexico this Saturday and then the USA on the following Tuesday before flying back to the UK for the Spurs game on the next Saturday, Honduras take on South Korea on Friday before playing China on Tuesday.

Although Rodallega is in the Colombia squad he will be staying 'local`, games against Ecuador and Chile are set to take place in Spain and Holland, McCarthy`s Rep of Ireland are due to face Macedonia on March 26th and Uruguay on the 29th.

There will be fingers crossed that the players return safe and sound from jaunts around the globe and just as importantly, injury free.

Bad timing for the internationals

Atleast we're playing spurs and chelski, rather than, say, West Ham and Blackpool.
