Wigan Athletic - Spurs Coming Up

When Wigan Athletic and Spurs meet in the league one thing that you can generally guarantee are goals, and lots of them.

Since the Latics won promotion to the top flight in 2005, they have met the North London club eleven times home and away and in those eleven games a staggering 38 goals have been scored, with just one game ending goalless back in September 2008 when the Latics and Spurs played out a very drab draw at White Hart Lane, though that game was the exception to the rule.

On Saturday Harry Redknapp will bring his charges north up the M6 looking to continue with what has been a fantastic campaign for Tottenham and maintain their push for another Champions League spot come the end of the season.

Spurs currently in 5th place in the table, four points behind 4th placed Manchester City but with a game in hand will surely be looking for the win at the DW Stadium and be aiming to put City under some pressure in the battle for that last Champions League qualifying spot.

But with a trip to Madrid scheduled for the following Tuesday to face Real in the Champions League quarter-finals, minds and eyes just might be on a different prize than the 3 points on offer at Wigan.

Plus Spurs don`t play too well before the big European games, so far this season there have been draws with West Brom, Birmingham and Wolves and losses to West Ham and Blackpool in the games prior to the European adventures, this might just indicate a little lack of focus and hopefully a chink of light for the Latics to exploit.

Sitting at the foot of the table Roberto Martinez`s men would be forgiven for trying to clog their way out of trouble, faced with a Spurs side who are desperate to avoid further injuries (Gareth Bale is already a doubt) getting 'stuck in` might be one option that the Latics could use to throw their opponents off their stride, but there will be no such tactics used whilst Senor Martinez is at the helm and Wigan Athletic will hopefully 'play` their way to victory on Saturday.

The performances since the turn of February have been quite good, no coincidence that they have coincided with the return to fitness and the first team for James McCarthy, the young Scot`s influence on the Latics belittles his years and he is integral to Wigan Athletic still being a Premier League side come next season.

A fascinating game is in store and there could be a continuation of the goal rush with both sides needing victory for very different reasons.

If I'm being honest I'd take a 0-0

I'd take a point of any description. I'd like a 3-0 home win and Spurs never looking like getting going.

Hope they take their eye off the ball, ready for Real Madrid, and we get our first back to back and our second double of the season
