'If It's Football, It's Vital'

The Magnificent Dozen Return

So the current bout of international games are now over and the players will be heading back to the DW Stadium, no doubting that although to have twelve squad members away on international duty is a proud achievement for Wigan Athletic, the hope that they all return fit and well ahead of the weekends clash with Spurs will be foremost in the mind of Latics boss Roberto Martinez.

So far the picture looks good.

Momo Diame, by all accounts, had a fantastic debut for Senegal in their ACN win over Cameroon, and Martinez is clearly delighted for the man he plucked from the Spanish second division, Martinez said: 'Momo's already become an instant hero in his homeland. It's a great reward. I think he can cope with the international demands now.

'You can see that Senegal are putting a very strong team together right now, and it seems that Momo is going to be an important part of that.

'He really enjoys being part of the Senegal set-up and we're excited for him as he begins this journey.'

Steve Gohouri also played a major part for his country as the Ivory Coast overcame Benin to stay at the top of their group.

Antolin Alcaraz only played in one of Paraguays two games over the past ten days, unfortunately he played in the defeat to Mexico last Saturday rather than the win over the USA on Tuesday, but at least he`s been rested ahead of the Spurs game.

Hugo Rodallega got a full 90 minutes on Tuesday for Colombia, but they lost 2-0 to Chile, the game was played in Holland, so not too much travelling for Hugo.

That cant be said for our two Hondurans Maynor Figueroa and Hendry Thomas who played in their country`s defeats to South Korea (Friday) and China (Tuesday), quite a few air miles clocked up there.

Both Gary Caldwell and James MacArthur featured in Scotland`s game against Brazil on Sunday, Caldwell getting 90 minutes, McArthur 70 minutes, speaking about the Brazil game McArthur said: "It was a great occasion, to play against Brazil is something you dream of doing in your career and I was fortunate enough to get that chance.

"At times we worked extremely well and tried to get on the ball but they're a fantastic team, different from previous Brazil sides that I've watched, pressing the ball and making it hard for the opposition to play.

"We're all winners in Scotland, we want to win no matter who the opposition is and you could see that during the game, there were a few challenges going in and it was well contested."

"Before then game when we exchanged hand-shakes Ronaldo greeted both teams"

"I didn't notice it was him until he was in front of me and we were shaking hands.

"I shook hands with George Peat (SFA President), looked up and saw it was Ronaldo next in line and it was a real pleasure to meet a real legend of the game."

Ali Al-Habsi was back home in Oman this week as his national side pulled off a great victory over Tunisia 2-1 to the Omani`s.

James McCarthy made a late substitute appearances last Saturday for the Republic of Ireland in the 2-1 win over Macedonia in the Euro qualifier and then the 20 year old midfield man started on Tuesday as the Irish faced World Cup semi-finalists Uruguay in Dublin.

Victor Moses has been away with the Nigeria squad but unfortunately he was unable to feature in either of their two games due to a lack of international clearance.

Tom Cleverley has been with the England under 21 party for the two games against Denmark and Iceland, Tom started and starred in the win against the Danes but he was a second half substitute in the next match as Iceland ran out 2-1 winners at Deepdale.

So 12 travellers all hopefully returning fit and well and any jet lag can be shaken off before Saturday`s big game against Spurs.
