Ping Pong - Hugo and Jordi Calling

Latics stars Hugo Rodallega and Jordi Gomez put on a volley good show this week as they dropped in to a local high school to support a major drive to promote sport in the local community.

Wigan Athletic Community Trust`s highly successful PREMIER LEAGUE 4 SPORT project hosted an Under 14s table tennis tournament in conjunction with Wigan Table Tennis Club and St John Fisher RC High School (my old school). The tournament also featured pupils from Abraham Guest High School, Byrchall High School, Fred Longworth High School.

The pupils were rewarded with the chance to play the tournament, and pit their wits against Hugo and Jordi.

After a couple of thrilling matches with the lucky participants it was Jordi and his partner who came out on top. Jordi said:

Jordi Gomez enjoying a game

Hugo Rodallega added: "It's a pleasure to come to these events and it`s great to see so many children enjoying the game! But Gomez was lucky, he cheated, as normal."

Hugo getting serious

Wesley Partington, the Premier League 4 Sport Co-ordinator said: "The tournament reflected the popularity of the game in the borough, we have seen a huge uptake of young people into table tennis, which is not only a credit to the project but also the ETTA and Wigan Table Tennis club who have supported the project throughout.

"I`d also like to thank the players for giving up their time, you could see the joy they brought to all the pupils at the event."

Great stuff once again from the Latics

Jordi left-footed but right-handed - interesting. (My son bowls with one hand in cricket and bats with the other - to my shame I can't remember which way round it is [and he lives in Peru so I can't easily check].)
