Martinez Reflects on Hugo's 'Special Moment'

Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez says that Hugo Rodallega`s 21st Premier League goal for the Latics is a tremendous achievement and a special moment.

Speaking to Latics Player, Martinez says that all of Hugo`s goals have had something about them but singled out two as extra special.

Away at Aston Villa on the opening day of the 2009/10 season, Martinez`s first game in charge, Hugo unleashed a 35 yard belter that zipped into the top corner, leaving Villa keeper Brad Friedel with no chance and setting up the Latics for an early season away victory.

The second goal that Martinez picked out was Hugo`s last minute winner at home to Burnley, also from last season, saying that one will live long in the memory of Latics fans more for it`s significance than for being spectacular.

Martinez said: 'It's a tremendous achievement to reach 21 Premier League goals, a record that will be very difficult to break in the future.

'For any player to put his name in the club's history book is a special moment, but on the day it was a team performance in which every man played an important role.

'Hugo is a player who takes responsibility; he goes onto the pitch looking for goals and prepared to give everything for the team which is the mark of a true professional.'

'All of the goals have something different about them, he's always scored against the top sides too, creating a real threat for any defence.

'If you're trying to highlight one strike in particular it would have to be the one he scored in my first game in charge, against Aston Villa away at the beginning of last season. The quality of that strike was outstanding, had great meaning and the execution was unique.

'In terms of significance the goal he scored against Burnley at the DW Stadium last season is one that will live long in the memory of every Latics fans."
