Baines - Latics Are Good Enough To Stay Up

Baines - Latics Are Good Enough To Stay Up

Former Wigan Athletic left back Leighton Baines struck home the 78th minute penalty for Everton that denied the Latics all the points in Saturdays encounter at the DW Stadium, but the England international didn`t take any great satisfaction from it.

The reaction of Baines when he scored, minimum celebration, just an arm raised, was telling in its self and after the game he told the waiting press that 'hopefully the penalty wont carry too much weight`, but the fact that he blasted home shows the true professionalism of the man brought up the Wigan way.

Baines spent six years at the Latics and it is obvious that the club is still in his heart, speaking to the press he said he hopes that they will get out of trouble and he believes that, with the players at the club, the Latics will survive.

Baines said: 'If they stay up, it will give me a lot of satisfaction, I will always look out for them and have a good feeling towards them. Hopefully they will get the wins to see them over the line.

'They have got some really good players and they have got it in them to stay up. Fingers crossed for them.

'There are still a lot of people at Wigan from my time. A lot of the players have moved on, but there is a good number of staff and the Chairman Dave Whelan.

'The club means so much to him and he is a great man. Hopefully the penalty won't end up carrying too much weight and they will be fine.

'They are good enough to stay up.'

Latics v Nottingham Forest - Big Game Preview

You can dress it up as you like, but for the Latics this is a game that they just have to win, we start a run of fixtures that would surely have been earmarked as ones to gain maximum points from and get us up the Championship table.

Forest arrive at the DW Stadium just six points ahead of us in the standings, they have injury problems, particularly in defence, they are on a poor run of form having lost their last three games, conceding 10 goals along the way, this is a time when we simpl
