Latics First Pre-season Game Sorted

Wigan Athletic will be heading over to Lincolnshire this summer to play a pre-season warm-up fixture against non-league side Boston United sometime in July.

Boston have announced the fixture on their official website but the exact date still needs to be confirmed. The Blue Square North side have a special place in Latics history and rumour has it that the East Stand at the DW Stadium wasn't re-named after former Wigan Rugby League player Billy Boston as suggested, but actually in honour of Boston United for their ultimate sacrifice for the good of the Latics in 1978.

With Boston finishing top of the Northern Premier League at the end of the 1977/78 season, it was their right to go forward to seek election to the football league, but they very graciously stepped aside and allowed the Latics, as their runners-up, to take their place and, after a tie in the voting with Southport, the subsequent re-vote saw the Latics elected to the Football League, thank you very much Boston United, and as they say, the rest is history.

The Latics have never been back to York Street to say thanks formerly, so this will be an ideal opportunity, plus assistant boss Graeme Jones had a spell playing with the Pilgrims (Boston's nickname) after he'd left the Latics, so a chance for Jonesy to catch up with some old acquaintances.
