Wigan Athletic Player of the Season Awards

Wigan Athletic Player of the Season Awards

Last night (Wednesday) was the Wigan Athletic Player of the Season 2010/11 Awards Dinner and what a rip roaring success it was.

The Supporters Club bar under the South Stand at the DW Stadium was packed to the rafters, supporters, players, club staff and sponsors mingled, the food was excellent, the beer was good and the awards were merited.

There were some excellent speeches made from the players on accepting the awards and Latics boss Roberto Martinez, but the most moving, passionate and uplifting came from Latics chairman Dave Whelan who said: 'being chairman of Wigan Athletic made him the proudest man alive`, Whelan was quite emotional speaking about the Latics and he had everyone pumped up ahead of Sundays game with Stoke.

Whelan also said that we may be the smallest club in the Premier League but we have the 'best supporters` and that he is very proud of the Latics fans.

Anyway the awards went more or less as expected, Ali Al-Habsi receiving the Player of the Season award and the Supporters Club Away Player of the Year award. The Media Player of the Year went to Ben Watson and Antolin Alcaraz took the Players, Player of the Year. Charles N`Zogbia won the Golden Boot but with one game left Hugo Rodallega just might be thinking that he can make up the two goals that he needs to claim the award himself.

The winners in full were:

Player of the Year - 1st Ali Al Habsi, 2nd Charles N'Zogbia, 3rd James McCarthy
Goal of the Season - James McCarthy v Blackburn Rovers, February
Outstanding Contribution - Alex Cribley
Players' Player of the Year - Antolin Alcaraz
Team Performance of the Season - Wigan Athletic 1 Tottenham Hotspur 0
Media Player of the Season - Ben Watson
Fan of the Year - Daniel Dowd
Away Player of the Year - Ali Al Habsi
Young Player of the Year - James McCarthy
Michael Millett Award - Tim Chow
Golden Boot Award - Charles N'Zogbia

Congratulations to all the winners
