Roberto Martinez Set To Turn Down Aston Villa

Roberto Martinez Set To Turn Down Aston Villa

Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez is set to turn down the opportunity to become boss of Aston Villa to carry on with the fantastic job he has started at the Latics.

Villa owner Randy Lerner approached his Latics counterpart Dave Whelan for permission to speak to Martinez, that permission was granted and on his return from Barbados, where he has been on a holiday with his wife, Martinez met with Lerner but it is understood that he is reluctant to leave the DW Stadium at the moment and he wants to continue working at the Latics for at least one more season.

Confirming that he has agreed for Villa to talk to Martinez, Dave Whelan said: "I`d be surprised if he is Villa`s new manager"

"I have made it clear to him that I will be extending his contract.

"Villa have acted above board and in a totally professional manner throughout. They wrote to me asking for permission to speak to Roberto. He was on holiday at the time and I granted Villa permission."

Without question one of the best young managers in club football Martinez is destined for a job at one of Europes elite clubs and it will become increasingly difficult for the 37 year old to stay at the DW Stadium when the big boys come courting, but for the time being it would appear that he is set to carry on building for the future with his first love, Wigan Athletic.

Where in that statement does martinez say he will stay? Not too sure if we need someone like him at the moment but if we offer most managers apart from the big 6 the job they will take it...Money talks.

As I've said elsewhere going for a look and then saying, i'm better off at Wigan is all about sending a message to his squad.

If he wasn't interest then why cut his family holiday short? Not saying he is definitely going to be the next villa manager but his actions certainly suggest he has some interest.

He didnt cut his holiday short, he was due back this week, Whelan said Villa asked for permission to speak last week, so it looks like he finished his holiday off to me

Latics v QPR - Big Game Preview

An important game at the DW Stadium tomorrow for the Latics, Gary Caldwell will be hoping to banish the disappointment of conceding a 93 minute goal away at Forest last Saturday that saw a point slip away after coming from behind three times in the game.

QPR are in town, they aren't quite the multi-millionaires that they were the last time that we met, that was in the play off semi-final in 2014, but they do have a squad with lots of quality and will certainly pose a threat.
