Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez is set to turn down the opportunity to become boss of Aston Villa to carry on with the fantastic job he has started at the Latics.
Villa owner Randy Lerner approached his Latics counterpart Dave Whelan for permission to speak to Martinez, that permission was granted and on his return from Barbados, where he has been on a holiday with his wife, Martinez met with Lerner but it is understood that he is reluctant to leave the DW Stadium at the moment and he wants to continue working at the Latics for at least one more season.
Confirming that he has agreed for Villa to talk to Martinez, Dave Whelan said: "I`d be surprised if he is Villa`s new manager"
"I have made it clear to him that I will be extending his contract.
"Villa have acted above board and in a totally professional manner throughout. They wrote to me asking for permission to speak to Roberto. He was on holiday at the time and I granted Villa permission."
Without question one of the best young managers in club football Martinez is destined for a job at one of Europes elite clubs and it will become increasingly difficult for the 37 year old to stay at the DW Stadium when the big boys come courting, but for the time being it would appear that he is set to carry on building for the future with his first love, Wigan Athletic.![]()
