Roberto Martinez Set To Turn Down Aston Villa

Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez is set to turn down the opportunity to become boss of Aston Villa to carry on with the fantastic job he has started at the Latics.

Villa owner Randy Lerner approached his Latics counterpart Dave Whelan for permission to speak to Martinez, that permission was granted and on his return from Barbados, where he has been on a holiday with his wife, Martinez met with Lerner but it is understood that he is reluctant to leave the DW Stadium at the moment and he wants to continue working at the Latics for at least one more season.

Confirming that he has agreed for Villa to talk to Martinez, Dave Whelan said: "I`d be surprised if he is Villa`s new manager"

"I have made it clear to him that I will be extending his contract.

"Villa have acted above board and in a totally professional manner throughout. They wrote to me asking for permission to speak to Roberto. He was on holiday at the time and I granted Villa permission."

Without question one of the best young managers in club football Martinez is destined for a job at one of Europes elite clubs and it will become increasingly difficult for the 37 year old to stay at the DW Stadium when the big boys come courting, but for the time being it would appear that he is set to carry on building for the future with his first love, Wigan Athletic.

I exepct him to carry on his promise, thats his 5 year plan, wants to get us into Europe, accomplish this with us Bobby, you will leave wigan with the fans support, leave now and it shows no loyalty in football, we want you to stay, read this and remember that!

Martinez = next Barca manager

Where in that statement does martinez say he will stay? Not too sure if we need someone like him at the moment but if we offer most managers apart from the big 6 the job they will take it...Money talks.

As I've said elsewhere going for a look and then saying, i'm better off at Wigan is all about sending a message to his squad.
thorpyness
if he goes i will loose faith in humanity
legolad
If he wasn't interest then why cut his family holiday short? Not saying he is definitely going to be the next villa manager but his actions certainly suggest he has some interest.
young_jonah
Plus don't forget he ditched Swansea for you after telling them he would never leave.
young_jonah
He didnt cut his holiday short, he was due back this week, Whelan said Villa asked for permission to speak last week, so it looks like he finished his holiday off to me
worbo
Please stay Bobby :'(

As a Villa fan I hope he stays at Wigan - I do not see what all the fuss is about??? Average at best.
Timmsy
have you seen wigans team? N he kept us in the league 2 seasons in a row. Then you look at villas team? N you were fighting relegation 3 quarters of the season. Thats what the fuss is about
Marksparko
i agree what is all the fuss about a good manager does not lose 9-0 you can keep him so what he kept you up but the same can be said for mick mc carthey and steve keen and there not being sounded out as the next big thing! yes he does get them playing some attractive football but at the end of the day results count and you havent had any , mark hughes all the way you can keep martinez.
choppercox
sorry forgot to mention if gerard houllier can finish higher in the league than martinez bring on steve mclaren lol and yes i have seen wigans team relegation specialists.
choppercox
