Whelan Expects Quick Martinez Decision






Wigan Athletic owner Dave Whelan told BBC 5Live that he expects Latics boss Roberto Martinez to make a quick decision on whether to quit the DW Stadium to take up residence at Villa Park.

Martinez was given permission by Whelan to speak to Aston Villa following a formal approach last week by Villa owner Randy Lerner, those talks are believed to have taken place today.

Speaking to the beeb Whelan also said that his gut feeling told him that Martinez would remain at the Latics, Whelan said: 'I had a good meeting with Roberto and the decision whether he is going to stay or go is entirely in his hands'

'I will support him whichever way he wants to go.

'I've offered him an extension to his contract and a better contract, because his current deal is down to a year.

'I have asked him to make a decision and tell me and the rest of the world, and I think he will be doing that in the next 24 hours.

'My gut feeling is he will stay at Wigan, but he will move in 12 or 18 months or two years, and he will go to one of the top European clubs.'

'You have got to be realistic about it, if someone comes in - a big club like Villa - and says 'we are going to double your wages', a lot of people would jump and say 'I am going to do that'.

'Roberto is not that kind of man. He thinks long and hard. He is into football hugely and is enjoying what he is doing at Wigan.

'He has learned so much and taught me so much. Together, we are a great partnership.'


"It should have took him no longer than 5 minutes to come to a decision. What the hell is the point in leaving to go there? "

The Wigan chairman has been extremely magnanimous in allowing his manager to speak to Villa, after backing him all season with the threat of relegation. The manager should honour his contract. As for 'the claret and blue faithful' be careful what you wish for, as Martinez will prove a top class manager in the years to come, and you may regret him not managing your club.

Kudos to Whelan. Extremely magnanimous about allowing Martinez and leaving it up to the manager and in his praise in the way Villa approached him. Good to hear football still has gentlemen in it and not everybody driven by greed and glory. As a Villa fan, I think Martinez would be a seriously astutue bit of business for Villa. I like the way he conducts himself and clearly has a good knowledge of football and respect from his players. Looks like we wont get him though
