Martinez Stays At The Latics

Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez has decided to stay just that and rejected the chance to double his salary at Aston Villa.

Martinez was Villa`s number one choice to replace Gerrard Houllier, who left the Villa Park hot seat due to health reasons, and Latics chairman Dave Whelan gave his Villa counterpart Randy Lerner permission to talk to Martinez once the Spaniard returned from holiday.

Loyalty and principles aren`t words usually used to describe people inside football at the top level, but it would look like Roberto Martinez has an abundance of those qualities in his makeup as he decided to stay loyal to Dave Whelan, the Latics and his adoring fans as he is set to continue the transformation and rebuilding of Wigan Athletic that he started two years ago.

It's like stoke all over agian...what a club !
Nice one Bobby, onwards and upwards
Fantastic commitment from a manger, not many would stay in that situation. I thin the majority of the villa fans will be happy i have to say for some reason. I was a neutral really but you guys should are lucky to have a manager like that, appreciate it!
Seems no-one wants the Villa job ;)
I said he would.
Rob bitter as usual. Seriously when are you gonna get over you not being able to beat us last year!!! How funny would it be if moyes came to us now? Aha!
Where exactly have you got this information from as i have seen no reports of him deciding yet.
Villa 4 Ever
Where exactly have you got this information from as i have seen no reports of him deciding yet. Villa 4 Ever - Its on the Villa official site
P.Avfc, relax mate, it was a joke, I am sure you will find a manager that will be a good fit for Villa, are you that angry at being a Villa supporter?
Yeah saw it now, nothing was on newsnow lol, Oh well, perhaps worked out for both parties we will never know, Seems a decent manager with potental but doesn't seem ready for a big club, think he needs another 2-3 seasons at Wigan. So far he has no experience winning anything. I think players at Villa are probably bigger than Martinez which you really don't need. You want a manager to look up to, he has no real history of making transfer dealings at a high level. Do we really know if he could cope with the ego's at Villa such as Ireland, Warnock, Dunne ? I was unsure before being linked to him, but i did warm to the idea and would of gave him a chance. Let's hope Villa bring in Moyes/Rikjaard/Ancelotti/Raniri/Benitez/Hughes, I think going for Martinez was the cheap option.
Villa 4 Ever
Not a funny joke rob haha! And it doesn't make sense seeing as who has rejected us? Martinez has been loyal to wigan, ancelotti wasn't event interviewed, we rejected mclaren and rafa soooo? No point at all there.
Rare to see this kind of loyalty and integrity in todays game. I applaud Martinez. Though we look to be up s**t creek managerial wise.
Holte End Hero
If you read the official Villa statement - Martinez didn't even talk to Villa. He decided to stay and honour his contract.
Have to say I'm neither disappointed nor surprised by his decision. He seems to be a genuine guy with principles which is a rarity in football these days. Not sure he was the one for us anyway but even so he has proved that there is still loyalty in the game, something a few of our overpaid prima donnas should look at!!
He's a real gent our Bob. He will only move for a bigger club, not a" we think we are a big club" Come on Wigganers buy those season tickets now and lets move up a level.
The mans pure class ! a real gent
taff, we fill our ground...On MOTD you have about 50 fans LOL
taff your talking trash.
Villa 4 Ever
What a beautiful change in an ugly era of football. Im SO happy for all of Wigan, you have a great Manager & a great Chairman. Martinez has a very good future ahead of him & what refreshing change to see some integrity in football. Long may it & your EPL existence continue. I hope this doesn't sound condescending as thats the last thing I want it to sound. I genuinely mean it & although Whelan has openly declared Wigan as a selling Club since your arrival in the EPL, the more seasons you stay at the top then obviously the less likely you will need to sell. I believe if you keep hold of N'zogbia & with a couple of signings (possible loans, something I'd like Spurs to do with some of our talented youth as I think any developing Player would have a great learning experience under Martinez) you'd end up comfortably in the top half & therefore pushing for Europe. Wish you guys & Martinez all the best.

Thanks very much TSS
loyalty in football, who ever heard of such a thing. Shows we were after a quality man. Happy for you, not us though!
The Fear
Got to say You've got a real gentleman for a Chairman - this is how clubs should behave with each other when they try and do business .
Actually TSS it was Steve Bruce who tagged Wigan with the "Selling Club" title. Unfortunately its stuck with us despite Whelan and Roberto saying we dont have to sell for the past two years.
Wigan-nz I apologise, I genuinely thought I remembered Whelan saying so on SSN in your 2nd or 3rd season in the EPL ? Anyway thats not really the point, Im just happy to see some genuine decent behaviour, respect & integrity. The football World can learn a lot from Whelan & Martinez, a lot.

No worries. I wasnt having a go just thought it was worth a mention. Thanks for your comments though, nice to see fans respecting the game and other clubs.
