Wigan Athletic - Our Time Has Come






Vital Latics member Paul Thorp, aka Thorpyness, takes a quick look back at recent events concerning a certain Senor Martinez and gives us his thoughts on it all, over to you Thorpy:



If you thought the final day of the season was tense, you should have been with a Wigan fan this morning, particularly those that have backed Martinez throughout his reign. On the last day of the season, the expectation from the inside was counterbalanced with the expectation from the outside.

Internally we felt we had a great chance of survival, which was contrasted by some expert opinions which said Wigan would struggle to survive. Wigan are too small and their time had come. We proved them wrong. From that half time team talk against West Ham we had the advantage of being the underdog, starting out in the position of weakness, nothing to lose everything to gain. We also had the benefit of being at Stoke amongst believers, not in an office or factory, or school full of heathens.

Once Again today the expectation from the outside was that Wigan are too small to compete with the larger teams, that once again our time had come, they all 'know' that we give up our best assets as soon as the teams with the bigger ego's come knocking. Once Martinez was known to be the Villa target, the odds tumbled, nobody gave Wigan much chance to hold onto their man. They got proved wrong again. This time however the tension was worse, we were in the position where we had everything to lose and not much to gain. We certainly didn't lose.

What did we gain?

The gain, whilst not as obvious as the loss would be, is just as important for the development of the club. Over the course of the last two transfer windows, we've seen the chairman say to any player courted by another club, 'I don't need to sell you, but we won't stand in your way'. The manager has been telling the same players, stay put I want you here, and we believe your best move is to not move. Off the back of this we extended Figueroa, and we kept Charlie away from Birmingham.

Today we`ve not only shown we have a committed manager, we have a manger that has now walked the walk he's been talking. When he tells players to stay here this summer, he's now saying I believe in this club, I believe in you, help me do a job in taking Wigan Athletic forwards. He has added credibility when he says it; he's asking them to do exactly what he's just done. Will they trust him, well when you show the integrity that has been displayed over the last couple of days, you deserve a bit of trust.

This morning I've seen multiple tweets and posts saying Roberto would be mad to stay at Wigan, all of course coming from people with no association to this club. More importantly coming from people with no appreciation of the way we have assembled a squad of talented young players with bags of potential.

Ladies and Gentlemen, our time has come.

As a Wolves fan,surviving the final day with you was special,just wanted to congratulate Wigan and their manager,loyalty is a very rare commodity these days and nice to see,all the best next season.

Well said Thorpy he has increased his credability 10 fold and then some by setting an example. People said he wouldn't cut it in the prem for me he is a one of a kind leader who will reach the top.
